Azri perseveres amidst life’s challenges and finds hope and support through our HOPE for Youth Tuition Programme.
By the age of 10, Azri needed to learn to be independent. His mother passed on when he was nine. Following his mother’s death, Azri lived with his relatives. His father was forced to work in Malaysia after facing difficulties finding employment in Singapore.
He now stays with his elder brother, his sister-in-law and his three nieces aged 8, 5 and 3 in a two-room rental flat. Since both his brother and sister-in-law are working full-time to provide for the family, Azri helps to look after his young nieces.
Azri joined the HOPE for Youth Tuition Programme since it started in 2016. The programme provided a healthy and conducive environment for Azri and his nieces to study. Through the weekly programme, Azri receives the help and guidance he needs to catch up with his school work.
“We’re glad to know that HOPE worldwide Singapore (HOPEwwS) has free tuition. When we have homework, we can bring here and also learn from the tutors. When I first came here for my homework, they taught me Maths and new methods, then I started to improve a lot. My Maths went from a D grade to a C grade,” said Azri.
Because of his improvement, Azri became a recipient of our HOPE Bursary Award in 2018. The bursary provides financial aid to students from low-income families.
Azri is now pursuing his higher education in the Institute of Technical Education. He has the vision to grow, to educate himself and to ultimately do well for his family and himself. His tenacity and resilience has been inspirational. As long as
Azri and his nieces require support from HOPEwwS, we will continue to assist them in their journey to overcome adversities and reach their potential.
