Johnson & Johnson’s HOPE for Seniors Volunteerism Event at Toa Payoh, 24th July 2009
“Because We Care”
24th July 09 proved to be a fun-filled afternoon for fifty seniors at Blk 170 Toa Payoh Lorong 1, as forty-four Johnson & Johnson staff volunteers, together with HOPE worldwide Singapore volunteers facilitators, gave their hearts to befriend and play games with them.
The seniors were delighted when the J&J volunteers presented them with literally a sweet packet of fruits each! There was lots of mingling and laughter at each table as everyone played a game of guessing whether the next card is higher or lower in the hi – low card game, and then the popular Bingo game. No doubt were they delighted when every senior walked away with prizes from each game. The prizes included J&J items (ie shampoo, talcum powder and body wash). There were also ten lucky draw food hampers. The event ended well with savory soon kueh, rice and vegetarian kueh and curry puffs for a delicious tea-break and a splendid fan dance performance by two volunteers Lillian and Jenny.
Mr Quek Ming Chin is 78, but he is still strong despite his ailments. He is still able to travel every day to his son’s place at Toa Payoh to spend time and chat with his friends. He said chattily, “I liked the fun we had during the card game and also getting to know the volunteers.”
His buddy volunteer, Mr Kieng Meng, Manager at J&J, experienced volunteering for the first time during the event. He was very enthusiastic throughout the programme. He said, “At home, there are granny and grand aunty to look after, so communicating with the elderly here is stress-free.” He definitely was a big help by being buddies to two seniors at the same time!
Another senior, Cheong Kok Ying, 72, has been attending the Lion Befrienders’ programmes for 10 years now. She enjoys the monthly singing and opportunities to mingle with the other seniors and volunteers. “I like the fun and laughter during the games today, and especially enjoyed the card game”, said the cheerful and enthusiastic Madam Cheong.
Madam Cheong’s volunteer buddy was Dalyn, a Financial Executive at J&J. She said, “It’s my first time volunteering and it was fun. Even though there was a language barrier, I enjoyed communicating with the seniors through simple English and hand gestures.”
Thanks to the Johnson & Johnson staff who took time off their work to serve the seniors in the Toa Payoh community! Truly your motto “Because We Care” was well exemplified by your sacrifice and willingness to reach out and touch the hearts of the seniors.
